Tonitto's has had the privilege of creating over 16,000 wedding cake masterpieces over the last 40 years and has earned the reputation of creating some of the most beautiful, unique and delicious cakes ever made in the Illawarra region.

The History of Tonitto Continental Cakes

Founder of Tonitto's Vincent Tonitto started his career as a pastry cook in Italy completing his apprenticeship there and immigrating to Australia to bring with him delicious recipes and techniques from both Northern and Southern Italy, applying them in popular hotels and Italian patisseries of Sydney. In 1974 he moved to Wollongong to establish his own business, known today as "Tonitto Continental Cakes", the Illawarra's first continental cake shop.

Laurence Tonitto watched his father work hard and as a child remembers helping with pastry cooking tasks and learning the skills and techniques that helped him become the pastry cook he is today. After completing school, Laurence received an apprenticeship with La Renaissance French Patisserie at East Roseville, while completing his TAFE course at Top Ryde Catering College. The remainder of his apprenticeship was completed with his father at Tonitto Continental Cakes.

In 1995 Laurence and his wife Loretta bought the business from his parents and have since then managed the business. He introduced a wide variety of new cakes and pastries, he established business with new clientele, expanding the delicious taste of Tonitto's. His creativity skills gave Tonitto Continental Cakes a reputation of high standard of quality existing today. Vincent Tonitto was always there for support until he sadly passed away in 2002.

Today Tonitto Continental Cakes serves most of the major clubs and reception centres in the Illawarra. They manufacture over 60 different lines of cakes, pastries and continental biscuits as well as specialising in wedding cakes. The store was purchased by new owners in December 2020 by Jane and Wayne Henderson. Both are looking forward to a bright future and thank you for your continued business.

Proudly Supporting the Local Wollongong Community

Tonitto's is also proud to support the local community. We have several charities that we donate to on a weekly basis including the Port Kembla Leagues Social Golf. We also sponsor the Port Kembla Junior Soccer club and make constant donations to local schools and charities whenever we can. We are also involved in the Work Placement program allowing local students to spend a small portion of their study time in our workshop, teaching them and working with them on skills they will appreciate in their future careers.
